Questions from parents

The things families ask us most. If yours isn't here, just ask, or call (619) 932-8247.

Starting out

Is the trial class really free?

Yes. Your first class costs nothing and there's no obligation to enroll afterwards. You don't need an account or payment details to try one, just send us a note and we'll find a time.

What ages do you take?

Little Stars is for ages 3 to 5. Recreational classes are open to all ages, and the SRG Academy competitive levels run up through the teenage years. We also run a stretch class for adults and one for dancers from other studios. See the full timetable.

Does my child need any experience?

None at all. Most children arrive with no background in the sport. Recreational classes are built for beginners, and a three-year-old in Little Stars starts by learning to skip, balance and move to music long before any apparatus is involved.

What if my child doesn't want to compete?

That's completely fine, and it's how most of our gymnasts train. Recreational classes carry no competition requirement. Gymnasts train for the skills and the enjoyment. If a gymnast later wants to compete, the SRG Academy pathway is open to them.

About the sport

How is this different from the gymnastics I see at the Olympics?

What most people picture is artistic gymnastics, vault, bars and beam. Rhythmic gymnastics uses none of those. It's performed on a floor, to music, with an apparatus in hand, and it rewards flexibility, coordination, balance and musicality.

Read the longer explanation, including what each of the five apparatus does.

Why is there ballet in the training schedule?

Rhythmic gymnastics is judged on artistry as well as difficulty. Ballet builds the posture, line and control that judging rewards, so it's built into the week from Level 3 upward, and it's bookable on its own too.

Is it safe for a young child?

There's no raised equipment to fall from, no bars, no beam, no vault. Training is on a floor, and skills are built gradually at each child's own pace.

On the day

What should my gymnast wear?

A leotard or fitted training wear, with hair in a bun. No loose clothing and no jewellery. Bare feet or gymnastics shoes are both fine.

How early should we arrive?

Five to ten minutes before class, which gives time to check in and get ready. If a gymnast arrives after the warm-up has begun, we may adjust their participation for safety.

What should we bring?

Water, and any apparatus your gymnast's level requires: rope, hoop, ball, clubs or ribbon. For a first class you don't need to bring anything but water.

What's expected of gymnasts in class?

Beyond arriving prepared, we ask everyone to listen first, support their teammates, and represent the club well at competitions.

Routines are built as a group, so tell your coach in advance if you'll miss a session. Equipment is shared, please put it away as you found it.

Parents drop off and collect rather than staying in the training area, see the question above. These expectations are a draft awaiting the club's approval. Team families should also see the SRG Academy page.

Can parents stay and watch?

No, parents aren't able to come into the training area. Gymnasts train better without an audience, and it keeps the floor calm and safe.

Please also don't drop by unannounced. Every visit, including a first trial, is arranged in advance so we know to expect you. Book a free trial and we'll confirm a time.

What will I see when I arrive?

There is no signage outside, so go by the unit numbers: 9835 Carroll Centre Rd, Units 107 & 108. There's a large parking lot with plenty of space.

We share the building with another gymnastics club, so when you arrive, say you're here for Flawless Gymnastics or for Coach Sofia and you'll be pointed the right way.

Every visit is arranged in advance, so we'll be expecting you. Get in touch before your first class.

Enrolling & fees

How much do classes cost?

Current pricing for every class is in our parent portal, which is always up to date. Trial classes are free.

How do we enroll once we've tried a class?

Through the parent portal, where you can also manage your account, view your schedule and pay fees. We'll help you set it up after your trial.

How does my gymnast join SRG Academy?

Placement is by invitation. Our coaches assess readiness individually, and most athletes enter through Pre-Team rather than jumping onto a competitive level. You can request an assessment, and the SRG Academy page sets out what each level asks of a family.

How much does attendance matter?

A lot. Consistent attendance shapes progress, skill development, placement, advancement and competition readiness, frequent absences can hold a gymnast back.

What if my gymnast misses a class?

We offer up to two make-up classes per 30 days for missed group classes, subject to availability and the club's discretion.

  • Book make-ups in advance, and use them within the same or the following month.
  • A make-up may differ in length, level or format from your regular class.
  • Options for Level 6 and up are more limited, given the training schedule.

We can't guarantee a make-up, but we will always make every reasonable effort to find one.

Unused make-ups can't be carried over, transferred, or applied as tuition credit, and we don't offer refunds or discounts for individually missed classes.

Do you offer private lessons?

Yes, for everyone who trains here: Little Stars, Rising Stars, SRG Academy team gymnasts and adults. They're scheduled around you rather than the class timetable, and families use them to catch up after time away, polish an apparatus, prepare a routine before a competition, or settle a new gymnast in before they join a group.

Every private lesson is arranged individually, so times, length and pricing are agreed directly with the coach. Ask about private lessons and tell us what your gymnast is working on.

Do you run camps?

Yes, four a year: fall, winter, spring and a long summer camp. Camps are open from age 4 and no experience is needed.

See the camp dates. Times and pricing are published in the parent portal once each camp opens.
